Releasing – Part of Healing Our Woundedness

Published On: October 15th, 2021

“We are all wounded in some way.  What we do with our woundedness defines us.  If we learn and grow from our wounds, they can motivate us to claim our Going-Forward Story.”

From Awakening the Light by Tambry Harris

Earlier this month, I explored how anger and resentment can be part of what feels like a protective shell, but in reality it traps the festering pain within.

After reading this, were you able to try the breathing exercise?  Did you begin to feel where the woundedness and pain reside within you?  I ask this because I have learned that breath and deep breathing are valuable resources for us.  I have found that it slows us down, relaxes us, and helps us know that some things are within our control.

To better understand and practice this, read below to walk through a simple breathing exercise.

Traci DeForge and Tambry Harris discuss how you can peel the layers of trauma to break through to the other side!
survivor of abuse, healing journey

In order to move into our reflection exercise, I want us to practice breathing because it helps to settle and ground us.  You will find that the more you practice deep breathing, the more it will be a natural resource to call upon whenever you need it.  Are you ready to try the exercise?

  • First, you breathe deeply.
  • As you breathe, invite healing into your heart and soul.
  • Sit with the breath coming in, filling your lungs, settling your body.
  • Try to visualize where the pain resides within you; breathe into that space.  Some feel the pain, wound, or anger in their shoulders, others in their chest and others in their stomach.
  • As you inhale, breathe in God’s love and healing power.
  • As you exhale, seek to breathe out the anger and resentment.
  • Continue to do this and notice if it helps to relax your body and spirit.
  • Name the pain or wounds that need to be healed to overcome the restrictive shell you have built.
  • If you feel tension or uneasiness, invite God to sit with you in the naming and claiming.  Know that you are not alone.

Do you better understand how this practice can be a resource to you?  As you feel grounded and are ready, move to the next exercise.

Now, I invite you to journal about any thoughts that showed up as you reflected. Here are some prompts that may be helpful:

The pain or wounds I need to heal are ______________________________________________.

I want to release ________________________________________________________________.

My healing prayer or intention is ___________________________________________________.

Part of my Going-Forward Story I want to claim is ______________________________________.

In closing, I want to share the following excerpts (author unknown) attributed to an Ute Prayer.  As you read it, see which verse speaks the most to you and give yourself time to reflect.  Sometimes we read quickly to get a sense of the passage but miss its meaning for us and our lives.

Earth teach me stillness, as the grasses are stilled with light.
Earth teach me courage as the tree which stands all alone.
Earth teach me freedom as the eagle which soars in the sky.
Earth teach me regeneration as the seed which rises in the springs.
Earth teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep with rain.

At Survivors to Thrivers, we are here to encourage your spirit to release the pain and anger that you have been holding so that you can experience the hope and future you deserve.  Please let us know other ways that we can support you because you are the reason we exist. We want you to feel a part of our Tribe and that is why we respond to every comment shared and every thought offered.

We offer weekly encouragement through our Instagram (survivorstothrivers) and Facebook (survivorstothriversofficial) posts.
