Going Forward: Survivors to Thrivers – Tory Deshazer

TORY DESHAZER
Outreach, Promotions, Hospitality Coordinator

The sexual assault of a close family member opened my heart, mind and eyes to the trauma that had happened to me as a child. This experience helped me put in perspective the victim I had been as a child, and to understand why I continued to accept the abusive behavior I thought I deserved. I developed coping mechanisms to numb the memory, along with a facade of togetherness to hide behind. My faith, many years of counseling, and the support of my loving family became my anchors through a painful divorce, job loss, moves, and challenges I had never expected to manage. A work in progress, I continue my journey of health, healing, and wholeness with a focus on investing in people and sharing my heart, my faith and my hope.

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE/BOARD:
With a degree in Management and Marketing, I’ve gained experience in many areas that enhance my ability to work on outreach, promotions, and hospitality for Survivors to Thrivers. Collecting money and repossessing cars for Ford Motor Credit Company, organizing and conducting focus groups for FacFind Marketing Research Company, and organizing public meetings for the Charlotte Department of Transportation honed my people skills along with my organizational skills. 19 years as a homeschool mom, combined with years of being a Director/Tutor for a homeschool educational program and then a Christian school, further deepened my heart for young people and for helping them cope with the challenges that our world brings. I bring a heart for all victims of trauma and abuse. I bring a heart for the healing and hope that this organization can provide, and a desire to bring light and love into an otherwise dark world. I bring enthusiasm for spreading Tambry’s message and for sharing the resources on our website.

Words that best describe me: trailblazing, nurturing, sincere.

WHAT YOU HOPE WE CAN ACCOMPLISH:
We seek to bring light and awareness into the darkness, shame and silence of sexual abuse and encourage survivors to find strength and freedom by claiming a story of significance. Every person who has suffered sexual abuse and limiting, negative beliefs can be liberated to claim the life they deserve and become the person they were meant to be.
