Living Your Life Consciously
What does “Living Consciously” mean to you?
To me, it is more than just being present in the moment, which I also value. It is being aware of my actions and why I behave the way I do. Let’s explore.

“How’s it working for you?”
As we move through our lives, we are given the opportunity to ask, “How’s it working for you?” If the answer is that you are not where you hoped to be, or you find yourself repeating the same unhelpful patterns, maybe it is time to pause.
In our lives, we all consciously and unconsciously build ways of thinking and being to help us feel safe and secure. Often, these ways of thinking and “being” keep us from living the thriving lives we desire. They can even negatively impact the loved ones around us.
Growing Awareness
One step to move out of this automatic, comfortable, well-patterned existence is to be curious. This means stepping into the unknown and seeking to see things with new awareness.
Awareness came to me when I went to see the musical Jagged Little Pill because I love Alanis Morissette’s music, but I had no idea of the storyline.
In a nutshell, it explores a range of sensitive issues, including rape, sexuality, addiction, and racism. It presents a vivid, messy, and chaotic portrayal of a modern-day family that deals with its pain and tries to heal.
The new awareness came from the central character, the mother, who has been living unconsciously since her rape in college. Her need to be perfect, to have the perfect family, and to live the perfect life is putting stress and strain on everyone. (This pattern is very familiar to me!) Her “awakening” came through an overdose, while mine came through an unexpected panic attack. We often need something to get our attention to help us see what is happening within and around us more clearly.

Your Life As a Play
What would the storyline be if your life were made into a play?
- Would it be an honest representation or one seeking to present an image of a happy, productive, even “perfect” life?
- How would you describe the main character (you) and her motivations?
- What are the plot points? Needed pivots?
- Who are the other characters in the story? Are they the ones you would choose?
- What is the tone of the soundtrack?
I invite you to close this year, consciously noticing your current thinking and behavior patterns. Perhaps even consciously choosing your new awakening chapter for 2026.

Starting Point: What speaks to you from these thoughts around living consciously?
- Living consciously means being aware of your thoughts and of your actions, your habits, and your reactions. It means becoming more aware of what you are thinking and doing, instead of acting impulsively.
- Conscious living means being aware of what is happening around you, aware of the people around you, and the words they say. It means becoming more aware of the environment in which you are living, acting, and working.
- It expands and sharpens your awareness of deep truths, the meaning of life, your inner self, and your real essence. This defines your purpose for being.
- Living consciously is the way to spiritual awakening.

On the 15th of this month, I will offer specific steps to begin to move into more conscious living.
Until then, begin to pay attention to the thoughts that go through your mind and behavioral patterns that feel natural to you, but may not serve you well.
